Risks in Traditional Casino Gambling

The careful design of the casino extends to the games themselves.  Each game is specifically designed to keep you gambling.

By understanding the way in which these games are designed, and the tools gambling operators use to keep us engaged, we can become more aware of our own actions.

Let’s start by exploring the traditional offerings in a casino, and a quick overview of what to keep in mind:

Risks in Table Games

Table games are the most classic part of a casino experience, think James Bond.

They are usually played at tables and involve direct interaction with dealers.  Almost all of them involve players competing against the house.  Popular table games include blackjack, roulette, and baccarat.

There are a number of ways casinos encourage table game players to bet more, more often, and for longer periods of time:

Forced Minimum Bets

These require players to wager a predetermined minimum amount on each hand or spin at table games. This tactic ensures that players are consistently putting money into play, even if they prefer to bet smaller amounts.  Forced minimum bets can lead to increased financial exposure for players, as they are compelled to wager more than they may be comfortable with. This can result in quicker losses and greater financial strain, especially for individuals with limited budgets or those susceptible to impulsive gambling behavior.

Side Bets

Many table games feature optional side bets that offer the allure of big payouts but come with significantly unfavorable odds.

These side bets are designed to tempt players with the prospect of large wins, despite the low probability of success.

Engaging in risky side bets can significantly increase the house edge and diminish the player's overall chances of winning. Players who frequently partake in these bets are more likely to experience rapid losses and erosion of their bankroll, as the odds are stacked against them.

A Social Atmosphere

Casinos cultivate a social atmosphere at table games by encouraging interaction between players and fostering a sense of camaraderie. This environment utilizes peer pressure to subtly encourage players to participate in more rounds of betting, and increase their wagers to match the perceived expectations of others.

The social pressure exerted in casino environments can lead to individuals feeling compelled to conform to group norms and engage in behavior that may be financially risky. This can result in players making impulsive decisions or exceeding their intended gambling limits in an attempt to maintain social status or acceptance among their peers.

Instructions on Optimal Play

Casinos often provide instructions and guidance on how to play table games optimally, including strategies to maximize winning potential. However, even when following optimal strategies, the inherent house edge ensures that players will experience a net loss over time.  Despite being armed with knowledge of optimal play, players may mistakenly believe that they can overcome the house edge and consistently win in the long run. This misconception can lead to overconfidence and a false sense of control, ultimately resulting in greater gambling losses and financial harm.

Use of Chips

Casinos commonly use chips, points, or tokens as a form of currency within their establishments, allowing players to wager without directly using real money. This practice creates a psychological barrier between players and the concept of wagering actual currency.  The use of chips, points, or tokens can contribute to a dissociation between the act of gambling and the financial consequences, leading players to underestimate the value of their bets and the magnitude of their losses. This abstraction can facilitate riskier behavior and increase the likelihood of excessive gambling, as players may perceive the tokens as mere game tokens rather than actual currency at stake.

Risks in Other Casino Games:

Slot Machines & Other Line Games

Slot machines and other line games are the most profitable gambling activity for gambling operators; they are also some of the most risky for players.  Players insert coins or tokens and pull a lever (or press a button) to spin the reels.

The objective is to align specific symbols to win prizes, with different combinations offering different payouts.  It requires no skill, understanding of strategy, or interaction with another human being.  As such, it tends to be the most accessible form of gambling to the general population.

There are so many mechanics in modern slot machines that make them especially risky, that we’ve devoted a number of lessons to the topic.  We encourage you to explore our lessons on Random Number Generators, Near Misses, and How to Play Safer to learn more.

Losses add up quickly with slot machines and other line games.

As an example, if you’re playing a line game at a fast rate, betting 25 cents per line on 10 lines per spin, on average, your cost of play is $375 an hour.  If you did this an average of 4 hours per week, after one year your expected expenditure, or in other words, net wins/losses, is close to $80,000 in losses.

Video Poker

Video poker machines combine elements of poker and slot machines.

Players are dealt a five-card hand, and they can choose to hold or discard cards to form the best poker hand possible.  The payout is determined based on the final hand's strength.

There are a number of ways casinos encourage video poker players to make bets that are not in their best interest:

  • Specific payouts that encourage players to engage without a good understanding of the optimal strategy for the specific game they’re playing.

  • Large jackpots that offer the chance to win a life-changing amount of money with a tiny bet

  • Multiple paylines that encourage maximum bet sizing

  • Bright lights, sounds, and colors to stimulate players’ senses

These also often provide particularly poor odds.  For example, a casino may claim a specific video poker machine has a 98% payback rate, but in reality the average payback is set at 90% with the other 8% put into the progressive jackpot where the odds of hitting it are astronomical.

This means the player will burn through their bankroll much quicker, especially when combined with the rapid rate of play.

Bingo and Keno

Bingo and Keno are popular lottery-style games. In bingo, players match numbers on their cards to numbers drawn by a caller, while keno involves selecting numbers from a set and hoping they match those drawn by the game.

There are a number of ways casinos encourage Bingo & Keno players to make bets that are not in their best interest, including encouraging players to play multiple bingo cards in a single session, and large jackpots that offer the chance to win a life-changing amount of money with a tiny bet that often make players forget how poor the odds of actually winning are.

Craps

Craps is a dice game where players bet on the outcome of the roll of two dice.

It involves various types of bets and a lively atmosphere at the craps table.

There are a number of ways casinos encourage Craps players to make bets that are not in their best interest including encouraging players to make complex bets with high house edges and a particular focus on the “social” atmosphere that utilizes peer pressure to encourage more “action”

The key to remember in ALL of these games is that:

  1. The house always has the edge

  2. The more you play, the more likely you are to lose
