It seems that gambling is everywhere you look these days.  If you’re anything like us, you may find yourself asking, how did we get here?

It turns out, gambling has been around for a long, looooooooong time.

Let’s take a quick trip through the history of gambling, with a specific focus on gambling’s rise in the United States.

The Early Roots of Gambling

Gambling has deep roots in human history, and has existed in many cultures throughout the world.  Let’s take a quick look:

Ancient Times

2300 B.C. - Ancient Dice

The earliest recorded evidence of gambling comes from ancient dice found in Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq)

2000 B.C. - Chinese Keno

Ancient Chinese used a game similar to modern Keno as a state-run lottery to fund the construction of the Great Wall of China.

1500 B.C. - Egyptian Dice Games

Egyptians played various dice games for entertainment.

Classical Antiquity

8th Century B.C. - Greek Gambling

The Greeks engaged in various forms of gambling, including dice games and coin tossing.

1st Century B.C. - Roman Betting

Romans placed bets on chariot races, gladiator contests, and other sporting events.

Medieval and Renaissance Periods

9th Century - Playing Cards

Playing cards originated in China and spread to Europe, becoming a popular form of gambling.

15th Century - First Casinos

The first known European gambling house, the Ridotto, opened in Venice, Italy.

17th to 19th Centuries

17th Century - Lottery Boom

European governments used lotteries to raise funds for public projects.

18th Century - Poker Emerges

The precursor to modern poker games began to develop in the United States

19th Century - California Gold Rush

The Gold Rush of 1849 in California saw the proliferation of gambling establishments in mining towns.

20th Century

The 20th century witnessed a significant transformation in the gambling landscape, marked by the legalization and regulation of various forms of gambling, including casinos, lotteries, and sports betting, as well as the emergence of regulatory bodies to oversee these activities and address concerns related to problem gambling and industry integrity.

Gambling in the United States

Given the current popularity of gambling in the US today, it would be easy to think of gambling as an ever-present activity in America.  However, that has not always been the case.

In fact, twice before in American history, legal gambling has spread across the nation, only to crash down in scandal and complete prohibition.*

17th Century

1600s - Early Colonial Gambling

Gambling was prevalent among early American colonists. Popular games included dice, cards, and lotteries.

18th Century

1769 - First Official Lottery

The first recorded American lottery was conducted to fund the construction of Faneuil Hall in Boston.

19th Century

1820s - Riverboat Gambling

Steamboat casinos began operating on the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers, offering a variety of games.

1864 - Nevada Legalizes Gambling

Nevada legalized gambling as a way to boost its economy during the Civil War.

Late 1800s - The Wild West

Gambling establishments were widespread in the Wild West, with saloons hosting poker games and other forms of betting.

20th Century

1931 - Legalized Gambling in Nevada

The state of Nevada legalized casino gambling, leading to the development of Las Vegas as a gambling hub.

1934 - Horse Racing Legalized

The legalization of parimutuel betting on horse racing marked a significant moment in U.S. gambling history.

1961 - Interstate Wire Act

The Interstate Wire Act was passed, aiming to combat illegal sports betting operations that used telephone lines.

1963 - State Lotteries

New Hampshire introduced the first modern state lottery. Over time, many states followed suit.

1988 - Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA)

The IGRA established the legal framework for Native American tribes to operate casinos on tribal lands.

That of course brings us to today.  Never before have technological advancements so rapidly changed the landscape of gambling.

Gambling in 21st Century America

2006 - Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA)

The UIGEA was enacted, making it illegal for financial institutions to process online gambling transactions.

2018 - PASPA Overturned

The Supreme Court overturned the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA), allowing states to legalize sports betting.

2020s - Expansion of Sports Betting

Several states legalized and launched sports betting operations, both in-person and online.<br><br>

2020s - Online Gambling Growth

Online gambling, including casino games and poker, gained popularity and became legalized in multiple states.

2021 - Emergence of Cryptocurrency Gambling

Some casinos began accepting cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin for gambling transactions.
