Celebrating Milestones & Progress

You’ve been working hard, and it’s important to celebrate your progress.

We’re not just saying that because we’re proud of you and we like to party, although we are and we do! We’re saying that because recognition of our progress is a vital piece of success in achieving and maintaining our goals.

By reflecting on our progress and celebrating milestones, we can strengthen our confidence and motivation for ongoing development.

In this lesson we’ll explore the power of celebration, and provide some practical tips on how to celebrate without gambling.

How to Celebrate!

Not sure how to celebrate?  Don’t worry, we’re here to help.  Let us introduce you to the Evive 3 Step Process for Celebration:

  1. Set Meaningful Milestones

  2. Reward Yourself

  3. Share Your Success

Step 1: Setting Meaningful Milestones

A meaningful milestone in our journey represents a significant achievement, progress, or positive change that we reach on our path to sustainable behavior change.

These milestones serve as markers of success, provide motivation, and reinforce the benefits of our ongoing efforts.  Need some examples?

Examples of Meaningful Milestones

Abstaining from Gambling

Celebrating the duration of time since your last gambling activity, whether it's days, weeks, months, or years.

Financial Milestones

Achieving specific financial goals, such as paying off debts, saving a certain amount of money, or maintaining a healthy budget.

Improved Relationships

Celebrating repaired relationships with loved ones, demonstrating trust and improved communication.

Emotional Stability

Recognizing your ability to manage and cope with emotions without resorting to gambling.

Enhanced Self-Care

Marking the establishment of a consistent self-care routine that supports overall well-being.

Mental and Emotional Milestones

Celebrating personal growth, such as improved self-esteem, resilience, and mental clarity.

Community Involvement

Recognizing efforts to give back to the community or help others, such as through volunteering or support group participation.

Employment and Career

Celebrating milestones related to professional success, such as landing a new job, maintaining consistent employment, or achieving career-related goals.

Physical Health

Acknowledging improvements in physical health, like achieving fitness goals, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, or improving sleep.

Spiritual Growth

Celebrating a deeper connection to one's spiritual beliefs or practices, such as meditation, prayer, or mindfulness.

Reduction in Urges

Marking the ability to manage and reduce gambling urges.

Step 2: Rewarding Yourself

Meaningful rewards play a crucial role in celebrating success and reinforcing positive behaviors in our journey towards lasting change. The best rewards are those that genuinely make you feel happy, appreciated, and motivated.

Choose rewards that align with your goals and values and bring you a sense of fulfillment.

If you’ve experienced financial harm from your gambling, you may feel that you don’t have the ability to reward yourself.  We challenge you to broaden your idea of what a reward is. Sure, it’s always nice to buy cool new gadgets, or a vacation, but rewards don’t have to be expensive to be effective.  In fact, they don’t need to cost very much money at all.

Here are some ideas for rewards that may help you celebrate, without breaking your budget:

Self-Care Activities

Treat yourself to a nap, a massage, a yoga class, or a relaxing bubble bath.

Hobby-Related Rewards

Invest in a new hobby or purchase inexpensive equipment for an existing one, such as painting supplies or gardening tools.

Adventure and Travel

Plan a day trip to explore somewhere new, unwind, and enjoy a change of scenery.

Health and Fitness

Invest in a gym membership, new fitness gear, or a workout class.  Investing in your physical health will pay big rewards down the line, and it doesn’t have to be expensive.

Professional Development

Enroll in a course, attend a workshop, or get a new book related to career growth.  There are plenty of free and affordable options out there these days.

Entertainment

Enjoy a concert, theater performance, or sporting event with loved ones.  Again, there are plenty of free options out there.

Social Experiences

Celebrate with friends and family.  If you don’t have the funds to go out to a restaurant, you can celebrate by hosting a gathering at your house, planning a movie night, or a hike.

Step 3: Sharing Your Success

It can feel strange to share your success with others.  It may feel like you’re being braggy or self-absorbed.  In truth, sharing your success is not only beneficial to your continued progress, it’s helpful to others too.

How Sharing Benefits Us

  • Sharing success allows us to receive validation and encouragement from our support network, boosting our confidence and motivation.

  • Sharing success holds us accountable for our goals. When others know about our progress, we’re more likely to stay committed to our plan.

  • It fosters deeper connections with our friends and family. By sharing our successes and challenges, we create a more open and understanding environment.

How Sharing Benefits Others

  • Sharing our success can inspire others in our support network who might be going through similar challenges. Our achievements can serve as a source of hope and motivation.

  • Sharing success can help reduce the stigma around problem gambling. By openly discussing our achievements, we contribute to more open and honest conversations about these topics.

The other thing that sometimes keeps us from sharing is feeling like our accomplishment is too small to take note of.  Don’t be fooled!  Small wins matter!

“Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out.” - Robert Collier

Take the time to celebrate even the smallest victories as they represent positive changes and efforts towards your well-being.

For example, maybe you used to spend your Sundays on your couch sweating over sports bets on a full day of football.  This Sunday, you decided to go for a walk and revel in the feeling of tranquility you get from being out in nature.  That sure as heck seems like a good reason to celebrate!

Let's Reflect

How do you typically acknowledge and celebrate my progress, and do you prioritize this aspect of my journey?

How do expressions of support and encouragement from others impact your perception of your achievements and progress?

Closing Thought

Celebrating milestones and progress in our journey is crucial for building self-efficacy, motivation, and confidence.  Take time to reflect on your achievements and small wins, maintaining a gratitude practice to cultivate appreciation for positive changes.

Keep in mind that progress may not always be linear, and setbacks are a natural part of the journey.  By acknowledging your progress and fostering a sense of accomplishment, you can fuel your motivation for sustained change and personal growth.
