Sharing Your Struggles
Explore different ways to engage your support system, and share your struggles with others.

Sharing Your Struggles
Uncontrolled gambling has often been called “the silent addiction”, as people struggling with gambling don’t often show physical symptoms as they might with other uncontrolled behavior. This can make it a lot easier for people struggling with gambling to keep it a secret from those around them.
As more time goes by and the struggle intensifies, the thought of “coming clean” about your secret can seem more and more daunting. This secrecy can lead to isolation, shame, and guilt, and prevents the vast majority of people who experience gambling harm from ever seeking help.
At Evive, one of our fundamental goals is to break that isolation. We don’t want you, or anyone else experiencing gambling harm, to feel that they are all alone.
And while opening up about your journey can be really intimidating, we believe it’s a necessary step to live a healthy and happy life without the crushing weight of gambling struggles.
In this lesson, we’re going to help you understand why opening up can be so powerful, and give you some practical advice on how to do it if and when you’re ready.
The Benefits of Opening Up For You
Opening up about your struggles with problem gambling can be profoundly empowering and transformative for you as an individual. Here's how:
Breaking the Silence
Sharing your story can help alleviate the burden of secrecy and shame that often accompanies problem gambling. By breaking the silence, you create space for honesty, vulnerability, and self-acceptance.
Seeking Support
Opening up allows you to seek support from trusted friends, family members, or professional counselors. By sharing your experiences, you invite others to offer empathy, guidance, and practical assistance, which can be instrumental in your journey toward lasting change.
Building Accountability
Sharing your struggles with problem gambling can create a sense of accountability. Knowing that others are aware of your challenges can motivate you to stay committed to your goals and take proactive steps to address them.
Finding Empowerment
By sharing your story, you reclaim your narrative and assert your agency in the face of adversity. Opening up about your struggles with problem gambling allows you to redefine yourself beyond your struggles and embrace your journey toward healing and growth.
The Benefits of Opening Up For Others
Opening up about your struggles with problem gambling can also have a profound impact on others who may be facing similar challenges. Here's how:
Reducing Stigma
By sharing your experiences openly, you challenge the stigma and misconceptions surrounding problem gambling. Your willingness to speak out can help break down barriers and create a more supportive and understanding environment for others struggling with addiction.
Inspiring Hope
Sharing your journey of recovery can inspire hope and resilience in others who may be feeling alone or overwhelmed by their own struggles. Your courage in opening up about your experiences can serve as a beacon of hope for those seeking guidance and support.
Fostering Connection
Opening up about your struggles with problem gambling can foster connection and solidarity within your community. By sharing your story, you create opportunities for empathy, understanding, and mutual support among those who have walked a similar path.
Promoting Awareness
Your willingness to speak openly about problem gambling can help raise awareness about the issue and its impact on individuals, families, and communities. By sharing your experiences, you contribute to a broader conversation about addiction, recovery, and the importance of support and compassion.
We’re not here to pressure you, or make you do anything. However we do encourage you to read through some of the stories of others who have chosen to share their story, and the impact it made on their lives:

Let's Reflect
*If you have already opened up about your struggles with gambling, consider your expectations before doing so, and what actually happened.
What are some concerns or fears you have about opening up about your struggles with problem gambling?
What do you think might change in your relationships or interactions if you were to disclose your gambling struggles?
Closing Thought
We’ve built the Evive Community to create a safe space in which all of us can connect with others who have shared lived experience, and support each other in our journeys.
This is a great place to start sharing your story, ask questions, or read the stories of others who have been in the same spot.
If you do feel ready to open up about your experience, we have many lessons with practical advice on how to facilitate the process in our Library Section - Opening Up.
