Addressing Concerns & Fears

How to address concerns and fear about your gambling.

Addressing Concerns & Fears

Addressing Concerns & Fears

It’s natural for your loved ones to express concerns and fears when you open up to them about your struggles with gambling.

Effectively addressing those concerns and fears can make a big difference in galvanizing your support system.

In this lesson, we’ll introduce you to practical steps that can help you navigate those conversations as effectively as possible.

Acknowledging and Addressing Concerns and Fears

The first thing to do is to acknowledge their worries and fears. That doesn’t mean that you need to agree with them.  It doesn’t mean that you need to find them fair.  It just means that you need to acknowledge that they feel the way they do.

To do this effectively:

Listen Empathetically

Pay close attention to the concerns and fears expressed by your loved ones without judgment. Try to exhibit empathy and understanding.  Try to avoid becoming defensive.

Validate Their Emotions

Let them know that their worries and fears are valid and that it is natural for them to feel concerned.  You’re not validating that they are correct in their emotions, you’re just validating that they feel them.

Clarify Misunderstandings

Address any misconceptions they may have about problem gambling to provide a clearer picture of your situation.

Providing Reassurance

One of the best ways you can address your loved ones concerns is by helping them understand your commitment to change, and the steps you are already taking.

Express Your Determination

Share your sincere commitment to achieving and maintaining lasting behavior change.

Share Your Action Plan

Discuss your Action Plan, including any support groups or professional assistance you are seeking.  This includes using any support groups you’re engaged in, professional help, and of course, using Evive.

Encourage Their Involvement

Invite them to be part of your support system if they are willing to help you on your journey.

Emphasizing Communication and Trust

This is also an opportunity to begin rebuilding trust, especially if this is the first they’re learning of your struggles.

Be Transparent

Encourage open and honest communication between you and your loved ones to foster trust and understanding.

Share Your Progress

Update them regularly on your progress and any challenges you may be facing during your journey.

In most cases, the more you communicate, the less they’ll fear.

Let's Reflect

How can you empathize with their perspectives and experiences, and what emotions arise for you as you contemplate addressing their worries and apprehensions? Are there any personal fears or insecurities that you need to acknowledge and address before initiating these conversations?

Think about the potential impact of addressing the concerns and fears of your loved ones on your relationships with them. How do you envision these conversations influencing your relationship dynamics and fostering a deeper sense of understanding, trust, and support between you and your loved ones?

Closing Thought

Addressing the concerns and fears of your loved ones is an essential part of rebuilding trust and strengthening your support system.

Be willing to listen to their worries and fears without judgment and provide reassurance about your commitment to change.

Share information about the steps you are taking to address the issue, demonstrating your determination to overcome problem gambling.

Most importantly, give them some time.  It’s natural for them to express concern when you first open up.  If you remain honest, transparent, and committed, their fears will fade over time and be replaced by pride in the transformation you are undergoing.
