Introduction to Self-Care
We have tons of recommendations on how to deal with triggers, cope with stress, and keep you on track toward your goals. However, there’s one thing above all else that can improve your chances more than anything: taking care of yourself.
In this lesson, we’re going to explore the power of self-care, and start the process of incorporating more self-care activities into our lives
What Is Self-Care?
Self-care is a deliberate and proactive practice of taking care of our health. It involves making choices and engaging in activities that promote our well-being and help us recharge.
Self-care is not selfish; it's an essential aspect of maintaining good health and resilience, and fundamental in our ability to enact lasting behavior change.
Why is Self-Care Important?
In the context of lasting behavior change, self-care is vital for several reasons:
Stress Reduction
Change can be challenging, and stress often accompanies it. Self-care techniques help manage stress and prevent burnout.
Emotional Regulation
Self-care practices can improve emotional regulation, reducing the risk of turning to unhealthy coping mechanisms.
Enhanced Self-Awareness
Engaging in self-care activities can increase self-awareness, helping us identify triggers and early warning signs of trouble.
Increased Resilience
Regular self-care builds resilience, enabling us to bounce back from setbacks and maintain our change efforts.
Improved Mental Health
Self-care plays a pivotal role in maintaining and improving mental health.
Improved Physical Health
Self-care plays a pivotal role in maintaining and improving physical health.
Categories of Self-Care
Self-care is also more than just taking care of our bodies. It’s about caring for all the aspects of our overall well being.
At Evive, we like to think of our well-being in 5 general categories:
Physical Self-Care
Caring for our bodies
Here are a few questions to consider for assessing your physical health:
How would you rate your overall physical health on a scale from 1 to 10?
Are you getting regular exercise, and if so, is it at a level that makes you feel energized but not fatigued?
How is your sleep quality? Do you feel well-rested in the morning?
Are you eating a balanced and nutritious diet?
Do you engage in activities that promote physical relaxation, like stretching or yoga?
Emotional Self-Care
Recognizing and managing our emotions
Emotional self-care involves recognizing and managing our emotions. It includes practices like mindfulness, journaling, therapy, and engaging in activities that bring us joy and relaxation.
It is vital as it promotes emotional resilience, healthy relationships, and mental well-being, enabling us to navigate life's challenges more effectively.
Mental Self-Care
Cultivating our mindset
Mental self-care centers on maintaining a healthy and positive mindset. It includes activities such as meditation, stress management, learning, and challenging negative thought patterns.
It is essential for maintaining a positive mindset, reducing stress, and fostering mental well-being, which supports our overall emotional and psychological health.
Social Self-Care
Nurturing our relationships
Social self-care emphasizes nurturing relationships and our connection to others. It involves spending time with loved ones, setting boundaries, and participating in social activities that promote a sense of belonging.
It is vital for building and maintaining a strong support network and alleviating feelings of isolation, contributing to our overall emotional and mental well-being.
Spiritual Self-Care
Cultivating our sense of purpose
Spiritual self-care doesn't necessarily relate to religion but rather to your sense of meaning and purpose. It can include practices like meditation, prayer, spending time in nature, or engaging in activities that align with your values.
It is crucial for exploring personal values, finding meaning in life, and fostering a sense of inner peace and connection to promote self-awareness and growth.
