Balancing Life and Behavior Change

Tips on finding balance while juggling multiple priorities.

Balancing Life and Behavior Change

Balancing Life and Behavior Change

Balancing work, relationships, and a personal life while trying to make major changes to your behavior can be challenging.  All of these things require a lot of energy, and demand focused attention.

However, with the right approach, it is possible to maintain your well-being and continue making progress.

Let’s explore some of the keys to finding balance in your own life.

Managing Work, Relationships and Personal Life

You can’t do all the things, all at once.  Change takes time, and this is a marathon, not a sprint.  Here are 3 keys to finding balance:

Establish Priorities

Prioritize the most crucial aspects of your life and focus on them to avoid feeling overwhelmed.

Be clear with what you’re focusing on, and try to track your progress against those goals.

Set Realistic Expectations

Set realistic expectations for yourself in other areas of your life.  Changing behaviors around gambling takes time and energy, so if it is your top priority, you may need to give a little less energy to other areas of your life at the moment.

Manage Your Time Effectively

Develop time management skills to allocate sufficient time for work, relationships, and personal activities.

We know, it’s earlier said than done to effectively manage your time.  However, there are a couple easy places to start:

  • Develop a daily or weekly schedule that includes work, family, and personal time.

  • Allocate time blocks for different tasks. For example, you might block off 30 minutes for exercise, an hour for therapy, and 15 minutes for journaling.

  • Utilize apps such as calendars, to-do lists, or time management to help you stay organized and on track.

Avoiding Burnout and Prioritizing Well-Being

Again, achieving lasting change is a marathon, not a sprint. You don’t want to come out too fast from the starting gates, and then crash and burn at mile 15.

Recognize Signs of Burnout

Be aware of signs of burnout, such as exhaustion, decreased motivation, withdrawing from social activities, etc.

Prioritize Self-Care

Make self-care a priority in your daily routine, ensuring you have the energy and resilience to cope with challenges.

Say "No" When Necessary

Practice saying "no" to additional commitments that may compromise your ability to achieve your goals.

One of the best ways to maintain balance is to establish a routine, and stick with it.

Establish and maintain a consistent daily routine that includes self-care practices.  If you’re looking for a place to start, we recommend prioritizing getting enough quality sleep and focusing on maintaining a balanced and nutritious diet to support your body and mind during recovery.  These two activities alone will have big impacts on your overall energy levels.

Let's Reflect

Can I identify areas of my life where I may be overcommitting or spreading myself too thin, and how does this impact my overall well-being and progress?

Can I identify warning signs of burnout, such as fatigue, irritability, or decreased motivation, and how do I respond proactively to prevent burnout from occurring?

Closing Thought

Achieving a balance between life and behavior change requires self-awareness, prioritization, and open communication.

Set realistic expectations and prioritize aspects of your life according to your needs. Emphasize self-care and establish boundaries to protect your well-being.

Remember, finding balance is an ongoing process, and being flexible and compassionate with yourself is key to success.
